Picture 1 of 10

Photograph of archeologists Dr. Walter Alva and Susana Meneses (Mrs. Alva) at the Moche (Mochica) royal pre-Columbian tomb excavation at Sipan, Lambayeque Valley, Northern Peru, where the Lord of Sipan was discovered by the team. Dr. Alva and Meneses review drawings and discuss the archeological excavation. The key royal figures discovered here are called warrior priests or the Lords of Sipan. The Sipan tombs explored by Dr. Alva and Meneses are the richest archeology site ever found in the Americas or New World. The Sipan treasure is in the Bruning Museum. The Moche culture began about 200 B.C., lasting to about 1000 A.C. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken August 20, 1989.
