Picture 1 of 12

Photograph of woman weaver using a backstrap loom that is anchored at one end to the wall and one end strapped around her back, in a village near Morrope, Lambayeque Valley, Northern Peru. The skilled woman craftsman is Marlene Zena Bances. Weavers in Peru use cotton thread and wool yarn, and the fibers are colored with dye. The ancient rural craft tradition for weaving textiles has changed little since pre-Hispanic times. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken April 2, 1989.
