Photograph of tomb raiders looting pre-Hispanic graves in the Lambayeque Valley of Northern Peru
Photograph of grave robbers or tomb raiders (huacero) looting pre-Hispanic graves for artifacts between Sipan and Chicalayo in the Lambayeque Valley of Northern Peru. The men and boys (huaceros) dig an Inca huaca and find Inca, Chimu and Moche culture artifacts, mostly beads and pottery shards. They use screen frames to sift the soil and clay around the tombs for small objects. They find many beads made of seashells. Archeology and protection of archeological sites is complicated by uncontrolled looters. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken March 29, 1989.
